기술의 진보는 새로운 매체를 끊임없이 탄생시키며, 기존의 종이 매체가 점차 도태되어 가는 현실에 주목한다. 이에 종이 매체가 여전히 가질 수 있는 매력과 가능성을 탐구하고자 하였다. 그러던 중, 팝업북이라는 형식이 종이의 물리적 특성을 넘어서 입체적이고 동적인 예술적 표현의 가능성에 매료되었다.

팝업북은 단순한 2D 이미지가 책장을 넘기는 순간 3D로 변모하는 신비로운 경험을 제공한다. 여기에 키네틱아트의 요소를 결합하여, 종이의 움직임이 자동화된 ‘키네틱 팝업북’을 구상하게 되었다. 이는 한정된 공간에서 다양한 입체적 조형이연속적으로 펼쳐지는 새로운 종이 예술의 방향성을 실험한다.

이러한 시도는 단순한 매체의 변화를 넘어, 종이를 활용한 예술의 새로운 물결을 상징한다. 작품의 전체적인 컨셉을 ‘파도’로 설정하여, 종이 조형들이 하나의 작은 물결이 되어, 점차 커다란 변화의 흐름을 만들어낸다는 메시지를 시각적으로 표현하고자 하였다.

이 작품으로 기술과 전통 매체의 융합, 그리고 이후 관람객의 참여를 통해 종이 매체가 여전히 예술적 상상력과 실험의 중심에 있을 수 있음을 탐구하고자 한다.Technological progress constantly gives rise to new media, drawing attention to the gradual decline of traditional paper-based forms. This led me to explore the enduring charm and potential of paper as a medium. I became drawn to pop-up books, which transcend the physical limits of paper to offer dynamic, three-dimensional artistic expression.

Pop-up books create a magical experience, transforming simple 2D images into 3D forms as the pages turn. Combining this with elements of kinetic art, I conceived the ‘kinetic pop-up book,’ experimenting with new directions in paper art by allowing a sequence of sculptural forms to unfold automatically within a limited space.

This attempt goes beyond mere media change, symbolizing a new wave of art using paper. The overall concept of the work is a ‘wave,’ visually expressing how small paper sculptures can become ripples that gradually build into a powerful current of transformation.

Through this piece, I aim to explore how the fusion of technology and traditional media—and the future participation of viewers—can keep paper at the heart of artistic imagination and experimentation.
