디지털 테라리움은 수많은 가상환경의 통신 속 오고가는 데이터 사이에서 자체적으로 탄생한 새로운 세계인 “노바넷" 관한 작품이다. 인간들은 이 디지털 세계의 환경과 생명체들의 존재를 알게되었고, 일부 생명체의 자아생성코드를 포획하여 테라리움안에 배치하는데 성공하였다. 연구 대상인 디지털 생명체들은 테라리움의 장치로 인한 상호작용에 반응하는 모습을 보여주며, 관람자는 테라리움안의 환경을 변화시켜 생명체의 특성을 탐구하고 간접적으로 이들과 교감할 수 있다. 본 작품은 현실의 물리적 상호작용이 디지털세상의 비현실적 공간에 적용되며 보여지는 두 현실간의 경계를 허물고, 평면 속에 갇힌 이들로부터 “생명의 본질은 무엇인가?”라는 질문을 마주한다.

테라리움의 유지에 중요한 3가지 요소인 조명, 환기, 습도와 엮어 각각 연구 방향에 맞는 생명체를 배치하였다. 조명 테라리움의 경우, 빛을 피하는 동굴 속의 기이한 생명체를 비추면 도망가는 행위를 통해 간접적으로 교감할 수 있다. 두번째, 환기 테라리움은 숲에 둥지를 만들어 맹독성 가스를 만들어내는 4족 보행 생명체의 공기 농도를 조절해 줄 수 있다. 마지막인 습도 테라리움의 경우엔, 물이 없으면 이성적인 사고를 하지 못하는 고지능 생명체의 성장을, 벨브를 열어 수분을 제공함으로써 도와줄 수 있다.

다만 인간들의 무분별한 개척은 테라리움 안에서 더욱 강조되었다. 테라리움 안에서 관람자는 디지털 생명체들과 상호작용할 수 있지만, 이 상호작용은 종종 탄압의 형태를 띤다. 그들의 생존에 중요한 물과 빛같은 자연적 요소들을 마음대로 조작한다. 생명체들은 그들의 세계에서 벗어나 새로운 규칙과 환경에 순응해야 한다. 가상세계의 생명체들을 가둔 이 디지털 테라리움은 인간의 무분별한 탄압으로 인한 피해와 혼란을 담담하게 보여주고 있다.

디지털 테라리움은 우리 인간의 욕망과 통제를 반영하여, 새로운 세계를 탐험하고 개척하는 인류의 발전의 밝은 면과 어두운 면을 동시에 드러내고자 한다.
Digital Terrarium explores “Novanet,” a new world born from various  data exchanges in virtual environments. Humans discovered this digital world and its life forms, capturing some creatures and placing them in terrariums. Here, digital organisms respond to interactions from the devices, and visitors can change the environment to study and indirectly communicate with them. The work blurs the line between physical and digital realities, prompting the question: What is the essence of life?

Three terrariums highlight key elements: light, ventilation, and humidity, each containing a unique life form. In the light terrarium, cave-dwelling creatures flee when illuminated. The ventilation terrarium features four-legged forest creatures that produce toxic gas, with air quality controlled by the viewer. The humidity terrarium holds a highly intelligent organism that cannot reason without water; visitors help it grow by supplying moisture.

However, human interference is strongly emphasized. Visitors can interact with these digital beings, but these actions often become oppressive. Manipulating essential elements like light and water forces the organisms to adapt to new rules and environments. The digital terrarium quietly exposes the harm and chaos caused by reckless human control.

Ultimately, the digital terrarium reflects both the bright and dark sides of human desire and control, as we explore and colonize new worlds.
