Artist Statement
살아있다는 건 어떤 의미일까?
나는 컴퓨터 소프트웨어와 기계를 결합해, 가상의 생명을 지닌 환상 생명체를 만든다. 이 존재들은 현실에서는 볼 수 없는 독특한 형태를 하고 있지만, 그 속에는 불완전한 인간의 신체와 정신에 대한 이야기를 담고 있다. 겉으로는 완벽해 보일지라도, 내면의 결함과 유한성에서 오히려 고유한 정체성을 찾아간다.
어린 시절, 반려동물과의 교감은 내게 살아있는 존재에 대한 매혹을 불러일으켰다. 그들과 나눈 기쁨과 슬픔은 생명을 가진 유기적 신체에 대한 호기심으로 이어졌고, 시간이 지나며 모든 유기체가 결국은 덧없다는 사실을 깨닫게 되었다. 이러한 깨달음으로 디지털 세계 안에서 시뮬레이션된, 겉보기에 완벽한 생명체를 상상하게 되었다.
하지만 내 탐구의 대상은 불멸이 아니라, 오히려 신체적 불완전함과 유한성이 안겨주는 고유한 아름다움이다. 나의 탐구는 유기적 신체와 디지털 기술, 그리고 인간성의 경계를 자유롭게 넘나든다. 포스트휴먼과 테크놀로지의 시대적 흐름 속에서, 나는 디지털 기술을 통해 인간의 본질을 다시 상상하는 꿈같은 생태계를 그려낸다. 그곳에서 나의 합성 생명체들을 매개로 살아있음과 기술 시대의 인간성에 대해 질문을 던진다.
우리는 어디에서 와서, 어디로 가고 있는가?
What does it mean to be alive?
I create Phantasmal life forms by combining computer software and machinery. These beings possess unique forms unseen in reality, and within them, I embed stories of the imperfect human body and mind. Even if they appear flawless on the surface, I seek to discover authentic identity through their inherent flaws and finitude.
As a child, emotional bonds with my pets awakened my fascination with living beings. The joy and sadness we shared led to my curiosity about organic bodies, and with time, I realized all living organisms, including humans, are ultimately transient. This insight led me to imagine simulated, seemingly perfect life forms within the digital realm.
Yet my pursuit is not immortality, it is the distinct beauty found in physical imperfection and limitation that attracts me. My exploration freely crosses boundaries between organic bodies, digital technology, and humanity. In the flow of post-human and technological shifts, I envision a dreamlike ecosystem where digital technology allows us to reimagine the essence of human. There, through my synthetic life forms, I seek to question what it truly means to be alive and human in a technological age.
